While this page was first written for a particular class, I include it here as most if it readily applies to others.

Final Evaluations for Strategic Management

Your grade will be determined by Prof. Müller and myself during your oral examination. 50% of your grade will be based on the material discussed during the lectures and 50% on your workshop portfolio.

The oral examinations have been scheduled for:

  • 25.6.10, 2.7.10 10-15uhr DT Group
  • 28.6.10, 5.7.10 10-15uhr ENG Group

Sign up for your exam on the sheets we will distribute in class.

Final Portfolios

At the examination, please submit a portfolio of your work including:

  1. Copies of at least 10 blog posts, printed from your browser so they include the url, arranged chronologically
  2. Copies of at least 30 comments that you have written on other student blogs. These may be copied into a Word file.
  3. A one page guide to your posts and comments describing your progress and what you have learned (give me a good reason to award you with a high grade: tell me where to look).
  4. All of this printed on A4 paper with simply your name, course name, and submission date in three lines in 11pt. type in the upper-left and a simple staple in that upper-left corner (please do not submit your work in paper or plastic folders or punch holds and bind them: a simple staple will make it much, much easier for me to transport and read them).

During the exam’s second half, you will have about 5 minutes (no longer) to present your portfolio to us and explain what you have done. Use your one-page guide as the outline for this presentation. This presentation should take the form of a story of learning, including, identification of the major steps and discussion of how you have deepened your understanding of the lecture material through web research, writing, and discussion, including:

  1. Searching for and finding relevant sources online
  2. Reporting on what you have found by posting to your individual and group blogs
  3. Commenting thoughtfully on other student posts

Evaluation Criteria

1. Search. We will be looking for evidence that you have used this workshop to significantly deepen your understanding of one or more of the topics of this course by searching for, finding, and reporting on relevant websites.

Discuss how your search strategy changed and became increasingly sophisticated and revealing. Report on how you found interesting and relevant conversations among committed professionals on current issues associated with your topic.

2. Reporting. We will want to hear how you have adopted a scholarly and professional language for online research and presentation, including:

  • Report on the professional conversation: use of report structures the the “They Say / I Say” rhetoric characteristic of academic writing
  • Structure your posts: clearly distinguish between description, analysis, and evaluation
  • Be forward looking: including reference to “background”, the present “state-of-the-art”, and emerging trends
  • Be a problem-solver: note the emerging problems and solutions

3. Discussion. We will be looking for evidence of conversation and discussion, including:

  • Your discovery of an on-going professional conversation
  • Links leading to your sources as well as recommendations for further reading
  • Comments on the posts of others indicating attentiveness to what they are saying as well as constructive criticism based on your own learning

Attendance Requirements

You are expected to arrive in class on time, participate actively, and completely your homework assignments when they are due. Abuse of these requirements may result in a reduction of your final grade.

Students in pass/fail courses are allowed to miss up to two classes without direct penalty, and it remains your responsibility to find out what went on in class from your classmates and proceed accordingly.

Attending class and posting to the web EVERY week is likely necessary to insure that you are able to fullfill the following scenario:

  • Search. It will take you about three weeks to define your topic, for the simple reason that you are likely new to the field, or at least this class, and so your record for this time will likely include false starts and difficulties (and eventual success!).
  • Survey Topic. We will assume that your next 3-4 posts will appear as a survey of the relevant issues as you probe 2-3 different aspects of your topic.
  • Understanding in Depth. We will assume that during the final 3-4 weeks you will begin to write as an “insider” familiar with your topic and develop sufficient depth of understanding.

Evaluation Rubric

For more information on the evaluation schemes my colleagues and I have been developing and use, please consult the evaluation rubrics developed by myself and Prof. Marcus Birkenkrahe.

Paper Submissions

So that I may carry, sort, and read your work easily, when submitting paper copies of hour homework/portfolios, please do not use any plastic folders but simply add a cover sheet with your Name, Group, Assignment, and Date printed on the upper left and stapled in the upper-left, as you see in this illustration:
